Women Leading Fossil Fuel Phaseout and A Just Transition

Belém, Brazil — On November 13, women leaders will speak at a COP30 press conference, organized by the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN), about critical strategies to advance a fossil fuel phaseout and a Just Transition that supports communities and ecosystems.

Despite governments agreeing to transition away from fossil fuels at COP28, production of fossil fuels in 2030 is projected to be 120% more than the amount consistent with staying below the 1.5°C planetary warming threshold. Without a global reduction in emissions, ecosystems will continue to pass critical tipping points, including in the Amazon Rainforest.

As governments continue with the expansion of fossil fuels, global women leaders are providing solutions and strategies for a fossil fuel phaseout and a pathway towards a Just Transition.

At the press conference, WECAN will be delivering the report, “How Local Community Power is Central to a Just Renewable Energy Shift”, which highlights effective and equitable community-led, rights-based energy solutions to end the fossil fuel era and achieve a Just Transition.
