2022 Events

  • July 22 - Climate Emergency Day, New York City

    • WECAN Program Associate Ashley Guardado, was in New York City for climate emergency day at the Climate Clock in Union Square, where the clock ticked down from 7 to 6 years, highlighting that we officially have less than 7 years to act to keep global warming below 1.5°C, based on scientific analysis. ​

    • Osprey Orielle Lake, WECAN Executive Director spoke during this panel hosted by Webit Summer Impact Forum.​

  • June 29 - Stand with Indigenous Land Defenders Action, San Francisco, California

    • On June 29, WECAN took action with our colleagues in San Francisco to honor the lives of Bruno Pereira, Indigenous environmental defender, and British journalist Dom Phillips, who were found murdered in the Amazon rainforest, after conducting research and interviews into illegal mining and other activities in Indigenous territories.  Osprey Orielle Lake, WECAN Executive Director was honored to speak during the action. ​

  • June 27 - Communities United by Water - Stop Line 5 Event, Wisconsin

    • water protectors, activists, and communities gathered for the Communities United by Water event to stop Enbridge's Line 5 pipeline and to uplift the vital importance of Indigenous rights, the great lakes ecosystems, and our global climate. WECAN was honored to be on the ground.​

  • June 20 - Intervention for Gender Equity and Women's Leadership at the 2022 Scenarios Forum

    • On June 20, at the 2022 Scenarios Forum, a team from The Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN), in affiliation with the UC Davis ModLab, delivered a presentation on how gender equity regarding women's leadership, agency, and political and social participation throughout society significantly reduces CO2 emissions. The Scenarios Forum is a conference bringing together climate scientists, social scientists, and energy systems modelers engaged in developing the Shared Socio-Economic Pathways (SSPs), which are a set of predictive climate models and data that inform reports by the IPCC. Global policymakers and decision-makers rely upon the IPCC reports to make data-informed decisions regarding climate policies and plans.

  • June 2 - Women Leading Solutions for a Healthy and Just Planet

  • May 25 - BlackRock Shareholder Meeting Action

    • WECAN, allies, and nearly 100 activists on the frontlines of the climate crisis, including faith leaders and youth, protested outside BlackRock’s Manhattan headquarters demanding that BlackRock exclude companies expanding fossil fuel production from its active and passive funds.

      • Osprey Orielle Lake, WECAN Executive Director, joined SHE Changes Climate  for a day of live panels. She spoke on a panel titled, “Activist Sisters,” highlighting why women are crucial in climate leadership.

  • October 26 - Delivering Climate Action: for People, Planet & Prosperity: one-day High-level Thematic Debate by the UN General Assembly

    • Osprey Orielle Lake, WECAN Executive Director, spoke to world governments at this urgent one-day High-level Thematic Debate held at the UN Headquarters in New York. The event was hosted by the UN President of the General Assembly to call for hope and ambition in the lead up to COP26. During her intervention, Osprey also presented the Call to Action developed as part of the Global Women's Assembly for Climate Justice.
