Indigenous Women from Brazil: Calls for Climate Action on the Road to COP30
Baku, Azerbaijan — On Thursday, November 14, Indigenous women leaders from the Amazon and diverse biomes of Brazil will present their calls to action for Indigenous rights and protection of the Amazon, water, communities, and the global climate. This event will be a press conference organized by the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
As global leaders meet for COP29, Indigenous women leaders who have traveled far from their Indigenous territories will share calls for climate action and the vital role of Indigenous Peoples, including discussion of the recent wildfires burning across Brazil. Amongst various topics, speakers will address the devastating impacts of deforestation, extractive industries and agri-business in the Amazon, but also the critical importance of Indigenous rights and knowledge as a climate solution and as essential to a successful COP30, which is taking place in Belem in 2025.
