Women's Earth and Climate Action Network Reacts to Paris Climate Accord
"In Paris, world governments signed onto an unprecedented global climate agreement. While WECAN salutes the groundbreaking effort, the fact is that the Paris accord fails to address the root causes of the climate crisis and the structures of injustice that perpetuate it. We are glad governments are talking about 1.5 degrees as a goal, but are very concerned that there are not the commitments and actions to achieve this. The agreement does not uphold gender equality, Indigenous rights, human rights and protection of ecosystems - and allows major polluters like the U.S. to continue to skirt around their historic responsibilities. We cannot continue business as usual, nor promote and implement false solutions that the agreement perpetuates - instead, we must put people and planet first. The good news coming out of Paris is that people around the world are standing up boldly and calling forth a healthy, beautiful future that we are envisioning together. The climate justice movement has been vibrantly displayed in Paris over the past two weeks. We must remember that this is where true power and hope lies as we move forward."
